the lowdown on LJ.
I’m a freelance designer and writer based in Kingston/Katarokwi (in Ontario, Canada).
My design credentials include a Bachelor of Interior Design (BID) from Yorkville University (2023) and a Certificate in Residential Interiors from the University of Alberta. I’m a LEED Green Associate, an Intern member of ARIDO and IDC, and working towards obtaining the supervised work experience ARIDO requires to qualify for the NCIDQ, the final step to becoming a registered interior designer in the province of Ontario.
As a BID student I participated in two competitions. I was selected to represent Yorkville University in ARIDO’s annual Norma Ruth Ridley Scholarship competition, in which my project — space planning of a mental health and wellness centre for university students — was awarded first place. My essay on COVID-19 and interior design of public spaces for sports and entertainment was one of three winning entries selected for the Interior Designers of Alberta student research essay competition in 2020.
I also hold a Bachelor of Arts in Drama and Semiotics from the University of Toronto and a Master of Library and Information Science from Western University. I have worked as an actor/theatre maker and instructor, web designer, arts and education administrator, publicist, event planner, yoga teacher, and freelance writer, and these past experiences inform my design process. You can learn more about my professional background on LinkedIn.
I’m passionate about design and the potential of design to rethink how we as a species and society of interconnected yet diverse cultures engage with contemporary material culture.
How might we shape our living spaces in a way that meets our current needs and works in parallel partnership with nature to conserve our precious resources - environmental, economic, and human - for the future?
How do we plan spaces that support flexible use for years to come? How do we use light, colour, form, and material to remove barriers and enhance inhabitant, visitor, and audience experiences?
These are questions that keep me up at night.
I offer design services for residential, commercial, and design and construction industry clients.
When it comes to residential design, my guiding principle is the knowledge that the home is the only space most people have full control over, physically and psychologically, which makes it sacred. For the owner, a home is a significant investment that represents security and independence. Every family has a unique lifestyle, values, priorities, and budget that informs design concept and decisions.
